In my last blog post, I will talk about how historical games helping people recognize, teaching and remember history, also entertaining people? Second and the important question – How the integration in-game and history demonstrate the social significance and its potential?

How historical games helping people recognize, teaching and remember history, also entertaining people?

Few people like reading history, but actually they’re willing to listen to the stories behind. There are too many stories about Taiwan that have not been found or questioned, and there are many areas and ways to understand and talk about Taiwan. Although people might think historical games where the historical context or narrative is hard to understand and not specific, however Detention are transferring the special culture element to a symbol or visual graphic, it is easier for gameplayer especially for the foreigner to gain a better understanding of historical events, reasons in the story, narrative, culture, and so on which full of educational value while they are enjoy playing the game.

Game Players can be somewhat immersed in an historical context or narrative, with varying degrees of historical overtones ranging from the setting, ambience to tools, such as the tools for puzzle-solving and music, sound, or character and events. Their designers present a visually verisimilitudinous environment, player can navigate through the the notes and the setting in the game. While playing the game, it is much like to reading a real historical novels but this time it is through the video game to recognise the history.

“Have you forgotten, or are you too afraid to remember?”

This is the tagline in Detention and it is also a reflection of the lead’s self-discovery and of the nature, but take a step back and you’ll realise, it’s also a political statement which a traumatic history that’s still relevant today.

Recently, there have a lot of audacious or innovative ideas when creating and developing independent games. Such as combined the element of humanities and history in the game. Taiwan’s independent game development teams have also started to try to combine Taiwanese history with games, Red Candle company “Detention” is a successful case that has attracted a wide range of attention.

Historical games model historical problem spaces in significantly different ways from narrative historical texts. The player is faced with different choices and a variety of possible narrative outcomes based on those choices. Different players playing the game as designed will experience different scenes and episodes in different orders. interactivity is the key feature of historical games which makes games possibly a powerful medium for investigating the past. Historical games can presenting the past through the systems and interactions, the causal connections that made past societies and people act the way they did. (McCall, 2019) Historical video games can affect on how players approach and understand the past. They had shown the game designers’ understandings of the past, not only in terms of what the designers think about the past, but also in terms of what they think is important to know, engage, and remember.

The initiative and immersive experience of the game provides the player with a new way to recognize the historical texts. Even, there is some department of History at University have noticed that video game can be an education and promotion tool for students to learn history. The game – Detention is the first games added to the prestigious library’s Chinese collection in Harvard-Yenching librarian Ma Xiao-he. (Carpenter, 2020)

The historian had always released their concerns about the distorting historical facts on the historical games, however, there are a bunch of game industry has developed such diversified historical game on the market. The game content development also the education and disseminate of historiography is hard to make improvements If the historian just keeps criticizing. Despite their many differences between the games and the real-world historical settings but it also existed in the historical and take on roles that existed historically. Therefore, the combination of video games and history has hit the trend. Through Detention, it taught people that history should not be forgotten, history should be faced and confessed. It also remind me that Is there anything scarier than tasting freedom and happiness?
